It's so heavy because there is so much packed into this machine that is not there in the lowly Krups one at Target. The most obvious difference between most consumer espresso machines is the portafilter and group on this machine are large.

Was he stuck shopping for a new coffeemaker? I was given a Krups XP2070 Coffee/Espresso Combination machine as a gift in September 2009. It worked wonderfully for us until approximately October 2010, at which point the machine failed to turn on.
